The Art and Science of Cropping Cropping is the process of removing unwanted outer areas from an image to improve its composition, remove distractions, or change its shape. In Photoshop, you will use the Crop Tool (C), which you can select from the Tools Panel or by pressing the letter C on your keyboard. When you select the Crop Tool, a crop boundary will immediately appear around your entire image, along with a set of controls in the Options Bar at the top of the workspace. To fix this photo, you need to edit the sky and the subject completely independently. You need a way to tell Photoshop, "Only apply these changes to the sky," or "Only brighten this specific person." In Photoshop, isolating a specific area of an image is called making a selection. When a selection is active, Photoshop creates a temporary boundary—indicated by a flashing dashed line affectionately known as marching ants. Any adjustment you make while those marching ants are visible will only affect the area inside the boundary. The rest of your photo is completely protected.
