Raster vs. Vector Graphics: The Building Blocks Before we create a new file, you need to understand what kind of art you are making. Most selection tools allow you to modify an existing selection using the modifiers in the Options bar (the horizontal bar beneath the Menu bar). When a selection tool is active, look at the far left of the Options bar to see four icons: 1. New Selection: This is the default. Making a new selection will discard any existing selection. 2. Add to Selection: Allows you …

5. Cropping and Transforming Images

In Photoshop, they are minor inconveniences easily fixed with the Crop Tool. At its core, cropping is the act of removing unwanted outer areas from an image to improve its composition, focus the viewer's attention, or change the shape of the frame. To get started, select the Crop Tool from the Tools panel (it looks like two overlapping right angles, or you can press C on your keyboard). Once selected, a crop boundary will immediately appear around the edges of your image in the Document Window. The Anatomy of the Crop Boundary When the crop boundary appears, you will notice several interactive elements: Corner Handles: Located at the four corners of the boundary. They need to remain sharp and editable at any size. In this chapter, we will explore how to add text and vector shapes to your compositions, building on the layer management skills you developed in Chapter 3. Understanding Vector Graphics vs. Pixels Before we start typing or drawing, it is important to understand a fundamental difference in how Photoshop handles imagery. Your photographs are made of pixels—tiny squares of color. When you zoom in heavily on a photo, it eventually looks blocky and blurred. This is called raster imagery. This icon is your visual cue that the layer is safely protected. Converting Layers to Smart Objects You can convert almost any standard layer into a Smart Object. 1.
