Recognizing Stress in Subjects Since we are photographing creatures that cannot communicate with us in words, we must learn to read their body language. If a subject is showing signs of stress, you have become a predator in their eyes, not an observer. Signs of stress in insects and small animals include: Erratic Movement: Rapid, jerky movements or sudden flights away from the lens. Defensive Posturing: Raising a foreleg, curling into a ball, or secreting chemicals (some insects release a foul smell when threatened). Freezing: While some insects freeze as camouflage, a subject that remains unnaturally still for a long period after your arrival may be in a state of shock or fear. Abandoning Tasks: If a spider leaves its web or a bee leaves a flower the moment you approach, you have disrupted its survival behavior. If you see these signs, back away.
