Today, Blackmagic Design offers DaVinci Resolve—a Hollywood-grade editing application available completely free. DaVinci Resolve is not just a video editor; it is a complete post-production studio. It handles everything from cutting raw clips together to adding Hollywood-style visual effects, mixing studio-quality audio, and performing high-end color grading. Because it does so much, its interface can look intimidating at first glance. This chapter breaks down the software from first principles, guiding you through downloading the application, understanding its unique page-based layout, and setting up your very first project. Getting DaVinci Resolve onto Your Computer Before you can edit, you need the software. DaVinci Resolve is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Downloading the Software 1. Open your web browser and go to the Blackmagic Design website. Navigate to the Support section, then click on DaVinci Resolve and Fusion. 2. You will see two versions available for download: DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Resolve Studio. DaVinci Resolve is the free version. It contains 99% of the tools a beginner will ever need. DaVinci Resolve Studio is the paid version. It unlocks advanced features like AI-driven magic masking, neural engine noise reduction, and support for certain high-end camera formats. 3. Click the Download button next to the free DaVinci Resolve version. You will be asked to register your details, but you can usually skip this step by clicking a small link at the bottom of the registration box. 4. The process is standard, but keep an eye out for one specific step: the installer will ask if you want to install Blackmagic RAW Player and other utilities. If you dive straight into cutting the video without organizing those files, you will spend hours hunting for a specific shot of an interviewee smiling or trying to figure out which audio file matches the camera video. Professional editors know a secret: the speed of your edit is determined long before you make your first cut. It is decided by how well you organize your media. In the previous chapter, we explored the overall interface of DaVinci Resolve and its page-based workflow. Now, we will dive deep into the Media Page, the starting point for every project. This is where you bring your raw materials into the software and arrange them so that they are easy to find when you move on to the Cut and Edit pages. The Media Page: Your Digital Loading Dock The Media Page is designed to look and function much like the file browser on your computer, but with specialized tools for video editing. It is divided into three main areas: 1. Media Storage (Top Left): This panel acts as a window into your computer’s hard drives. You use it to navigate to the folders where your raw video, audio, and image files live. 2. Media Pool (Bottom Left): This is your project’s internal storage. To make a clip available for editing in DaVinci Resolve, you must bring it from the Media Storage into the Media Pool. 3. Viewer (Right Side): This displays the currently selected clip so you can preview it, scrub through it, and set In and Out points (the exact moments you want the clip to start and stop) before you even begin editing. Importing Media: From Storage to Pool The fundamental rule of DaVinci Resolve is simple: if it isn’t in the Media Pool, you can’t edit it. There are two primary ways to move media from your computer into your project. Before they can sand the wood, stain it, and apply a protective finish, they must first saw the rough lumber to size and tack the pieces together. In video editing, this initial phase is called the rough cut (or assembly). It is the stage where you stop looking at a bin of raw clips and start looking at a sequence. You aren't worrying about perfect timing, smooth transitions, or color grading yet. You are simply deciding which clips make the cut, where they begin, and what order they go in. To do this, we will rely primarily on the Cut Page, which was designed specifically for fast, high-speed assembly. Before we start placing clips, we need to understand the canvas we will be painting on. In DaVinci Resolve, your video is built on two fundamental structures: the timeline and the track. The Timeline and Tracks The timeline is the horizontal area at the bottom half of the Cut Page. It is a visual representation of your video over time. If you look at the timeline from left to right, you are looking at the beginning of your video to the end. Within the timeline, you will see horizontal lanes. These lanes are called tracks. Think of tracks as layers of transparent film stacked on top of one another. Video Tracks display images. Whatever is on a higher video track (like Video Track 2) will visually cover up whatever is directly beneath it on a lower video track (like Video Track 1). Audio Tracks hold sound. Unlike video, audio tracks don't cover each other up; they mix together. If you have music on Audio Track 1 and dialogue on Audio Track 2, the viewer will hear both simultaneously. When you place a clip on the timeline, you are placing a specific segment of video and its accompanying audio onto these tracks. Setting Up Your Workspace If you have just completed the media import process from the previous chapter, your screen should be populated with the clips you brought in. To make sure we are on the same page, click the Cut Page icon at the very bottom of the DaVinci Resolve interface (it looks like a pair of scissors). 4. Refining Edits on the Edit Page

The Difference Between a Rough Cut and a Final Edit Imagine you are watching a conversation between two characters in a movie. The camera cuts to Character A, who finishes speaking. Then, there is a long, awkward pause before the camera cuts to Character B, who finally replies. It feels unnatural, dragging the energy of the scene down. In a professional film, that pause would be trimmed down to a fraction of a second, making the dialogue feel snappy and real. In Chapter 3, we used the Cut Page to quickly assemble our clips, dragging them onto the timeline to build a basic story. That process gives you what editors call a "rough cut"—a sequence of clips placed in the right order. But a rough cut rarely has perfect timing. Clips might run a few frames too long, a cut might feel jarring, or a scene might transition too abruptly. To fix these issues, we need to move from the Cut Page to the Edit Page. While the Cut Page is designed for speed and throwing a story together, the Edit Page is designed for precision. It is the traditional, frame-by-frame workspace where editors polish the timing and flow of a video. Getting Oriented on the Edit Page Before we start making adjustments, let’s look at where we are working. At the bottom of the DaVinci Resolve interface, click the Edit Page icon (it looks like a timeline with a playhead). If you completed the assembly from Chapter 3, your timeline will look very similar here, but the layout offers more room for detail. You will notice the timeline takes up a large portion of the bottom half of the screen, while the viewer occupies the top. The Edit Page gives you access to advanced tools that allow you to manipulate the exact points where two clips touch—known as the edit point. Every edit point has two sides: the outgoing clip (the A-side) and the incoming clip (the B-side). When we talk about trimming, we are talking about adjusting exactly where these two clips meet. The Blade Tool: Splitting Clips Precisely Sometimes, you don't need to adjust the boundary between two clips; you need to split a single clip into two pieces. Maybe you want to remove a stumble in the middle of an interview, or perhaps you want to insert a cutaway shot right in the middle of a continuous video clip. To do this, you use the Blade Tool. 1. Locate the toolbar directly above your timeline. You will see an icon that looks like a straight razor blade. 2. Click the Blade Tool to activate it. Text and basic visual effects are the unsung heroes of video editing. They provide context, guide the viewer’s attention, and add a layer of professional polish that separates a rough assembly of clips from a finished product. Now that you have assembled and refined your clips on the Edit Page, it is time to elevate your timeline. We will move beyond simple cuts and trims to add textual elements, apply basic visual effects, and introduce movement to static shots. The Titles Library: Adding Text to Your Timeline In DaVinci Resolve, adding text is not a single, rigid tool. Instead, Resolve provides a dedicated library of pre-built text templates. You can access these by clicking the Effects button in the upper-left corner of the Edit Page (or by pressing Shift+5), which opens the Effects Library. On the left side of this panel, you will see a category called Titles. If you expand this, you will find a variety of options. Text vs. Text+ vs. Fusion Title When you browse the Titles folder, you will notice three main types of text: Text: This is the most basic, lightweight text option. It renders incredibly fast and is perfect for simple lower thirds, titles, or closing credits. If you just need words on the screen, start here. Placing and Formatting a Title To add a title to your video, simply click and drag your chosen title from the Effects Library down into your timeline. When you drag a title over a video clip, you have two placement options: 1. Overwrite (Drop on top of a clip): If you drop the title directly onto an existing video clip, it will overwrite that portion of the video with the title. 2. Insert (Drop between clips): If you drop the title in the gap between two clips, it will push the clips apart to make room for the title. Once the title is on your timeline, it becomes its own clip. In fact, poor sound is the most common reason viewers click away from a video. Up to this point, you have been assembling your video primarily on the Cut Page and Edit Page, adding text, titles, and basic visual effects. While you have likely been adjusting basic audio levels along the way, DaVinci Resolve has a dedicated environment built specifically for professional audio post-production: the Fairlight Page. Named after Fairlight, a pioneering Australian audio company that Blackmagic Design acquired, this page offers studio-grade tools for mixing, effects, and sound design. But you don't need to be an audio engineer to use it. In this chapter, we will demystify the audio workflow, starting with the fundamental principles of sound in video editing, and learn how to balance levels, clean up dialogue, and automate your mix so everything sounds cohesive. Understanding Audio Fundamentals Before we dive into the Fairlight interface, we need to define a few critical terms. Audio editing has its own jargon, but the underlying concepts are straightforward. Decibels (dB) and LUFS Sound is measured in Decibels (dB). However, in digital audio editing, we use a scale called dBFS (Decibels Full Scale). On this scale, 0 dBFS is the absolute maximum volume your system can handle before the audio distorts into an unpleasant, crackling mess (known as "clipping"). Because 0 is the ceiling, all your audio levels will be negative numbers. A typical dialogue track might sit around -12 dBFS to -6 dBFS. You will also eventually encounter the term LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale). While dBFS measures the exact volume of a single audio peak, LUFS measures the perceived average loudness of an entire track. LUFS is how streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix standardize their audio. For now, we will focus on dBFS for our manual mixing, but keep LUFS in the back of your mind as the ultimate goal for final output. Frequency and Hertz (Hz) Sound travels in waves. Frequency refers to how fast those waves vibrate, which determines the pitch of the sound. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz). A deep bass rumble might be at 60 Hz, a human speaking voice usually sits between 100 Hz and 8,000 Hz (8 kHz), and the sharp hiss of a cymbal can reach 15,000 Hz (15 kHz) or higher. The morning sunlight you chased so eagerly looks flat and gray on the screen. This is the reality of raw video. Cameras, no matter how advanced, do not see the world the way human eyes do. Our brains automatically adjust to make a piece of paper look white whether we are under a yellow tungsten lightbulb or a blue overcast sky. Cameras simply record the light bouncing off objects, which means different light sources cast different color temperatures onto your footage. The good news is that this is exactly what the Color Page in DaVinci Resolve was built to fix. In fact, color correction is so central to this software that the entire application is named after the DaVinci color grading systems that revolutionized the film industry. Now that you have assembled your timeline, added your titles, and mixed your audio, it is time to breathe visual life into your project. The Color Page Interface When you click the Color Page icon at the bottom of the screen—represented by three colored circles—your workspace transforms. While the Edit Page was designed for cutting and arranging, the Color Page is a specialized environment for manipulating the color and brightness of your clips. The interface is divided into several key areas: The Timeline: Located at the bottom, this mirrors the timeline from your Edit Page. Whatever clips you have cut and arranged will appear here. Clicking a clip in this timeline makes it active for color correction. The Viewer: Situated in the top right, this is where you see your video. It updates in real-time as you make adjustments. The Scopes: Located in the top left, these are scientific graphs that show you exactly what is happening in your video's color and brightness. The Nodes: Situated in the middle, this is the heart of DaVinci Resolve’s color workflow. It is a visual flowchart where you build your corrections. The Color Wheels: Located in the bottom left, these are your primary tools for adjusting the image. Understanding the Node-Based Workflow If you have ever used photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop, you are likely familiar with layers, where corrections are stacked on top of one another. 8. Exporting and Delivering the Final Video

But when you try to upload your masterpiece to YouTube or send it to a client, you realize you can’t just send them a DaVinci Resolve project file. A .drp file only contains your editing instructions, not the actual video. To share your vision with the world, you need to translate your complex timeline into a single, self-contained video file. This translation process is known as rendering or exporting. Welcome to the Deliver page, the final stop in DaVinci Resolve’s page-based workflow. Navigating the Deliver Page If you’ve been following along from the Introduction to DaVinci Resolve and Interface, you already know that Resolve is divided into distinct pages designed for specific tasks. The Deliver page—represented by the rocket ship icon at the bottom of the screen—is where your edited timeline is packaged into a final, watchable video. When you click the Deliver icon, the interface changes. The timeline at the bottom remains, but the media pool and viewers are replaced by a massive set of options on the left side of the screen. This left-hand panel is divided into two main tabs at the top: Render Settings and Render Queue. The Render Settings Tab This is where you tell Resolve exactly how you want your video to be built. You will choose your file format, quality, resolution, frame rate, and file destination here. Because there are so many ways to export a video, Resolve organizes these choices into two categories: Easy and Advanced. For beginner learners, the Easy mode is more than sufficient. It provides pre-configured templates for common platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, and standard computer playback. Advanced mode unlocks granular controls for professional broadcast standards, which you likely won't need for standard web delivery. The Render Queue Tab Once you have configured your settings, you don’t actually render the video immediately. Instead, you add it to the Render Queue. Think of the Render Queue as a waiting room for your export tasks. You can load multiple different timelines into the queue, set different export settings for each one, and then hit a single "Render All" button to process them one after another. The Render Queue tab shows you a list of your pending jobs, their estimated file sizes, and their current status (Waiting, Rendering, or Done). It also provides a progress bar and a timer so you know exactly how long your current export will take.
