When the printed stack of paper is cut down to the final page size on a large industrial guillotine, that extra artwork is trimmed off. Without a bleed, a slight mechanical shift in the cutting blade could leave a thin, ugly white line around the edge of your page. Facing Pages: A setting that arranges your document in two-page spreads, just like opening a book or a magazine. If you are designing a single-page flyer, a poster, or a digital screen, you do not need facing pages. Master Page: A hidden, underlying template that holds repeating design elements (like page numbers, headers, and footers). Whatever you put on a master page automatically appears on all the document pages applied to it. Creating Your First Document When you launch InDesign, you are greeted by the Start screen. 3. Working with Frames and Text

Where does the rest of the text go? If you were working in a standard word processor, you might panic, trying to shrink the font or cut the story. But in InDesign, this is a non-issue. InDesign operates on a principle called "composition." Instead of text existing directly on a page, text lives inside containers called frames. You can pour an entire novel into a tiny frame on page one, and InDesign will hold the extra text in reserve, letting you "pour" the remainder into frames on page two, page three, or page fifty. They do not have the "X" inside them, and they do not have ports for threading text. Creating and Resizing Text Frames The most efficient way to …
4. Typography and Styles
Imagine you are designing a 20-page restaurant menu. You spend an hour perfecting the size, font, and spacing of the dish descriptions. It looks beautiful. But then, the owner calls and says, "Make the body text one point larger, and change the font from Arial to Helvetica." If you formatted every single line of text manually, you would now have to click through hundreds of text frames, highlighting and changing the text one piece at a time. What should take five seconds would take hours. This is why professional designers do not format text manually. Instead, they use Styles—saved sets of formatting rules that you can apply with a single click. If the owner asks for a change, you edit the Style once, and every piece of text using that Style updates instantly. Before we can save a Style, however, we need to understand the two levels of formatting: Character and Paragraph. The Two Levels of Typography In InDesign, text formatting is divided into two distinct categories: Paragraph formatting and Character formatting. Paragraph formatting applies to an entire paragraph of text, from the beginning of the paragraph to the invisible character (a "return") that ends it. This includes: Alignment: Left, right, centered, or justified. Indentation: Space between the text and the edges of the text frame. Space Before/After: Vertical breathing room between paragraphs. Drop Caps: Large capital letters that drop down into the text. Character formatting, on the other hand, applies to individual letters or words, regardless of the paragraph they live in. This includes: Font Family and Style: e.g., Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Regular, Bold, Italic. Size: Measured in points (pt). Leading: (Pronounced "ledding") The vertical space between lines of text. Kerning and Tracking: The horizontal space between two specific letters (kerning) or across a whole word (tracking). Color: The fill or outline color of the letters. Basic Formatting via the Control Panel In Chapter 1, we introduced the Control panel—the dynamic toolbar that stretches across the top of your screen and changes depending on what tool you have selected. When you select the Type Tool from the Tools panel and highlight text, the Control panel transforms into your primary typography dashboard. To practice basic formatting, select the Type Tool, click into a text frame, and highlight a few words. Look at the Control panel: 1. Font Family: Click the dropdown menu on the far left to see a list of all fonts installed on your computer. 2. Font Style: Next to the font name, use this dropdown to select Regular, Bold, Italic, etc. 3. Size: Type a number into the point size box (e.g., 12 pt) or use the up and down arrows. 4. Working with images in a page layout is rarely as simple as dragging and dropping. Because InDesign is a professional layout program, it treats graphics differently than a word processor or a basic image editor does. It needs to maintain a link to your original high-resolution files while giving you precise control over how those files sit inside your layout. Placing Graphics into Frames In Chapter 3, "Working with Frames and Text," we established a fundamental rule of InDesign: everything lives inside a frame. Just as text lives inside a text frame, graphics must live inside a graphic frame. While you can draw an empty graphic frame first using the Rectangle Frame Tool (the tool with an "X" through it in the Tools panel) and fill it later, the most common workflow is to let InDesign create the frame for you at the exact moment you import the image. A swatch is a saved color. Think of it as a bucket of pre-mixed paint. Instead of typing in a specific color code every time you want a certain shade of blue, you create it once, save it as a swatch, and name it. When you apply that swatch to different objects throughout your document, they are all linked. If you decide later that your "Corporate Blue" needs to be slightly darker, you simply edit the saved swatch, and every object using that swatch updates instantly. Meet the Swatches Panel All of your saved colors live in the Swatches panel. If it isn't already visible on your workspace, you can find it by going to the Window menu at the top of the screen, selecting Color, and clicking Swatches. When you open the Swatches panel for the first time, you will notice a few default swatches already living there. Let's define them: None: Represented by a white square with a red diagonal line. This means "no color." If you apply this to a frame's fill or stroke, it becomes completely transparent. Paper: Represented by a white square. This is the color of your virtual paper. If your document is set up to print on cream-colored paper, you would change the Paper swatch to cream to preview how your inks will look. By default, it is white. Black: A standard, solid black ink.
